Concept Android smartphone Sony XTRUD lets users customize its hardware and software

Product designer Rybarczyk Francois offers his vision of an Android-based smartphone with an architecture that allows users to replace its hardware components. Dubbed as the Sony XTRUD, the concept handset would be an environmentally-friendly product that would allow users to upgrade components to better ones, or replace broken parts without needing to shell out money for a brand-new smartphone. Beyond the hardware, supposedly, even the XTRUD?s software will be upgradeable to keep the device up-to-date.

sony-xtrud-concept-smartphone

Despite the fact that Francois uses the Sony brand on the product renders of his concept handset, he clarifies that the device is only a personal project, and may not necessarily be in line with Sony?s ideas.

The Sony XTRUD, according to the artist?s description, follows Sony?s aesthetic concepts. It has a simple plastic or aluminum exterior with a geometric pattern and round shaped buttons for user input. It would also come with a slim profile.

Screws on the top part of the handset would permit users to open the device easily to access and replace its internal parts, such as the battery, camera, and even the screen. The Sony XTRUD also does not need a case to change the color of the device. It can easily be personalized according to a user?s color preferences, or customized to promote the company brand. On the bottom of the device, one finds a volume control wheel that appears to double as a zoom ring, and even as an audio jack.

Francois also illustrates the possible smart manufacturing process of the concept handset. The process would involve CMF exploration, followed by extrusion, cutting, machining, and finally, anodizing.

The Sony XTRUD would support Android operating system and offer a dedicated website. Francois creates a packaging render for the device, as well, and proposes a selling price starting at $199.

Some consumers would certainly appreciate having more control over their smartphone. On the part of manufacturers, however, the customizable handset would mean that consumers would not need to purchase new phones every so often to replace outdated models. On the other hand, such a product would allow them to sell individual components.

Would you want to buy a customizable smartphone?

Fox News Latino:

Mexico City ? Colombian actress Sofia Vergara does not rule out the possibility of having a baby with husband-to-be Nick Loeb, but admitted that right now "it's not a priority" in her life.

"It's not a priority in my life" because Manolo, her son, is about to turn 22 and it would be "starting all over with the diapers," she said in an interview that aired Friday on the Televisa network.

Wedding Anniversary Gift Ideas

Individual wedding anniversary gift ideas have traditionally been standardized and, invariably, depend upon the length of the marriage. A wedding is a sacred covenant between two people. Each person promises to love, honor, and cherish one another for the rest of their lives. The initial celebration includes the giving of gifts to the couple along with well wishes. Once a person is married, staying married is a challenge. The temptations to step outside of the marriage abound. Children, parents, and friends often interfere with marital bliss. Plus, the realities of housing, finances, employment, and health tend to confront the relationship. As a couple continues to join themselves together to become one, family and friends can show their support by conferring symbolic gifts at specific intervals. One does not have to follow traditional ideas for anniversary gifts. However, a long standing list exist that is full of helpful hints. The list first began in Central Europe, with the recognition of two milestones. In specific, a custom developed in medieval Germany whereby, after 25 years of marriage, the family would present to the wife a silver wreath. After 50 years of marriage, a gold wreath was given. Back then, only these two anniversaries were celebrated. During the Victorian age, two more milestones were added to the list. The 60th and the 75th year; which garnered diamonds. Fast forward to 1922. Emily Post, the renowned manners guru, published a book called Blue Book of Social Usage. In the book, she listed eight wedding anniversary gift ideas for the 1st, 5th, 10th, 15th, 20th, 25th, 50th, and 75th milestones. She stated that these years were the ones people most often acknowledged. She also introduced additions to this list that included a gift for each of the first 15 years of marriage, plus one for every 5 years after that point. The American National Retail Jeweler Association got into the mix in 1937. That organization further expounded the list by associating a material for each year a couple stayed married; 1-20. Each year builds upon the previous. Therefore, in order to get to 20, the foundation of the first ten should be rock solid.

There are both traditional and modern wedding anniversary gift ideas out in the market place. Looking at the more traditional list, paper is a first year gift. Paper is made from interlocking fibers, however, it is quite delicate. When a couple's marriage is fairly new, the paper symbolizes the fact that although knit together, the relationship is still quite fragile. It should be handled with care. For the next year, cotton is the material. The properties of cotton are that of soft silky fibers. Instead of the roughness of paper, the relationship is beginning to combine in new and unique ways. Both prosperity and durability are associated with cotton. Though some issues have been smoothed out, the relationship is still quite soft and pliable. Once a couple gets to the 3rd year threshold, the material is leather. Much more durable and tough, leather has a smooth side and a rough side. As leather is used, the comfort of the material becomes more and more apparent. Year 4 brings gifts of linen. Linen is interwoven like paper and cotton, however linen is made from the flax plant. Its properties are that it is lightweight and cool. Wedding anniversary gift ideas should stress the fact that the burdens of the relationship are becoming lighter and cooler heads begin to prevail when disagreements appear. Wood marks the 5th year milestone. Wood is very strong in comparison to the materials of years 1 through 4. The strength of wood symbolizes the couples enduring strength and ability to last.

For the sixth year, wedding anniversary gift ideas indicate a bent toward iron. Iron is very strong, but can get rusty. A couple should understand that this gift is a reminder that although, their marriage maybe strong, they should be cautious about possible rust. Rust weakens the bonds of metal; symbolizing a weakening of the relationship if the marriage is not properly cared for. Wool is the material of year 7. Wool is dense and warm, highly flame resistant, and stretchable. The wool provides a protective covering. This covering is not impenetrable, though. Couples should recognize that though there is lots of protection from wool, when a person goes outside the covenant, that is covered by the wool, the wool can no longer be protective. In year 8, the symbolic material for wedding anniversary gift ideas is bronze. Bronze is the first material that represents a blend. Copper and tin are combined to make bronze. As the couple grows into their 8th year of marriage, they will be reminded, by the bronze, that they are becoming one. "What? know ye not that he which is joined to an harlot is one body? for two, saith he, shall be one flesh. But he that is joined unto the Lord is one spirit. Flee fornication. Every sin that a man doeth is without the body; but he that committeth fornication sinneth against his own body." (1 Corinthians 6:16-18)

The wedding anniversary gift ideas for the milestone of year 9 is pottery. A very important aspect of this material is that it is not a material; exactly. What is done to a create pottery reveals its importance. Pottery objects are made of clay into a required shape. Then, the shape is heated to extremely high temperatures in order to induce reactions that will lead to a permanent change in the character of the object. Using the idea of the marriage as the object, pottery symbolizes the marriage's ability to go through the fire and make desired enduring changes. Tin is the material of year ten. It's malleable, responsive, and highly crystalline. This is the first sign of a shininess in the relationship. This silvery-white metal illuminates the reward for a couple who gets to the ten year mark. Well on their way to a lifetime of wedded bliss, statistics show that divorce rates actually increase in year 10. But, they drop dramatically after year 15. In years 11, 12, 13, 14, and 15, wedding anniversary gift ideas are centered around steel, silk, lace, ivory, and crystal; respectively. Though these symbols have their meanings, it is really the couple, and their individual commitment to the covenant relationship they established, that can and will ensure the length of the marriage.

Are Obesity and Alcoholism Invented Illnesses? | Phoenix House

Drink Less, Eat Less: Are Alcoholism and Obesity Invented Illnesses? This month, the American Medical Association decided obesity is a disease, a decision that prompted some outcry from commenters who call both obesity and alcoholism invented illnesses. On Fox News, Dr. Keith Ablow says people choose addiction: ?When an alcoholic chooses alcohol over being available to his or her family and friends, that person is making a decision. ?When a heroin addict chooses heroin over financial stability and performing well at work, that person is making a choice, too.? At TIME, Maia Szalavitz writes that the disease concept can increase ?pessimism about recovery? and ?become self-defeating.?

It?s an old controversy but still worth revisiting. It?s useful to see addiction as a disease as long as we see the full picture?the many reasons people become addicted, the way forward from relapse, and the pathways to recovery.

The disease model helps people see that addiction isn?t a moral failing, and it causes progressive damage. Just as diabetes gets worse without care, someone may start with experimental substance use and progress to social use before developing a full-blown dependency. People often need some kind of structured intervention to improve, whether that?s twelve-step meetings, behavioral treatment, or medication to reduce cravings. While some people can quit without outside help, thousands of others do need professional help.

True, addiction to substances, whether it is food or drugs, isn?t a purely medical disease like cancer or heart disease. There?s a behavioral science component in addition to the brain chemistry side, too. I look at it from a bio-psycho-social viewpoint.

A person is complex and multidimensional, and people have different pathways to addiction. They can become addicted for physiological reasons (they?re taking an opiate medication for pain and become dependent) or for social reasons (they?re in a group of friends that abuses substances to have fun), for psychological reasons (to self-medicate a preexisting psychological condition) and perhaps because they have a genetic predisposition. Treatment reflects this complex approach. We may give medication to reduce cravings, but we also help people see how they developed their patterns of use and deal with their physiological and psychological dependencies.

We focus not just on relapse prevention but also a safety plan and coping skills if relapse happens. When people do relapse, we help them see what factors led to the relapse. Sometimes it?s physiological cravings, behavioral patterns that repeat under stress, or emotional and psychological triggers. When our clients see us handling others? relapses in an empathetic and caring way, they see a relapse is not a shame or a failure but a chance to continue to learn and move forward.

As treatment providers, we communicate hope, empathy and support.? We help a client identify his or her strengths. We assist the client to find their own motivation to change.? We recognize that coming in for a substance use assessment takes its own kind of strength and courage. ?In treatment, as clients set and achieve short-term goals in the process of recovery, we help them recognize both their progress and their possibilities.

Psycho-education is a vital part of treatment, as many clients need to learn about addictions, relapse prevention and life skills. Finally, to give up a substance and old behaviors, most need to practice positive new behaviors and new ways of handling emotions and triggers. Seeing addiction as a disease is not a cause for pessimism or self-defeat; it?s a way to help people get intervention and care.

National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST)

The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) announced that it plans to establish a new Advanced Materials Center of Excellence to facilitate collaborations between NIST and researchers from academia and industry on advanced materials development.

The planned center, which NIST expects to fund at approximately $25 million over five years, will emphasize innovations in measurement technology, modeling, simulation, and data and informatics tools related to advanced materials. NIST plans to hold a competition this summer to select an organization to host the new center.

The center will play a major role in NIST's support for the President's Materials Genome Initiative (MGI), which was launched two years ago.* The MGI is a multiagency effort in materials research with a goal of cutting development times in half while reducing the cost of discovering, engineering and deploying new advanced materials.

Typically, it takes 10 to 20 years for a new material to go from initial research to first use. Advanced materials and products, from the tough new glasses used for smartphone screens to new biomaterials to repair damaged tissues and organs in the body, are critical for the United States to get to market first in order to fuel innovation, create jobs and spur economic growth.

The President's Office of Science and Technology Policy (OSTP) announced a series of new initiatives in support of the MGI, including the planned NIST center of excellence. Samsung rolls out OLED TV as production glitches linger

By Miyoung Kim

SEOUL (Reuters) - Samsung Electronics Co Ltd launched its first OLED TV on Thursday, taking the ultra-thin technology into a nascent market despite tenacious production challenges that keep costs high while prevailing LCD screens only get better and cheaper.

The world's biggest TV manufacturer has staked its display future on OLED - organic light emitting diode - technology and its success with smaller screens has bolstered its smartphone market share and earnings. But big screens are likely to take a much slower road to profits.

OLED technology is widely believed to offer the potential for better picture quality than standard liquid crystal display screens, with crisper picture resolution, faster response times and high-contrast images. It also allows for curved televisions, which manufacturers say offer a more immersive experience.

But production constraints are a key problem.

Samsung is producing OLED screens for TVs from a small pilot line and some analysts estimate the yield at just 30 percent - with seven out of 10 screens from the line faulty, largely due to difficulties in spreading organic light emitting materials evenly across large screens.

Although many industry experts believe OLED will eventually be the next big thing, they do not think it will manage to do to LCDs what LCDs did to bulky cathode ray tube sets: almost completely replace them in the space of just several years.

"They are not sufficiently transformational to trigger a complete switch-over from LCDs," said Eo Kyu-jin, an analyst at IBK Securities, adding that for now OLED televisions would represent less than 1 percent of the 200 million-plus global TV market.

Samsung's $13,000 price tag on its curved 55-inch OLED television is the same as similar offerings from LG Electronics Inc, some five times more than popular LCD equivalents.

Samsung itself took a cautious tone, warning that industry forecasts for sales growth were a bit too optimistic.

"We have just introduced our first OLED TV and have to see consumer response to gauge overall market demand," Kim Hyunsuk, a Samsung executive vice president, told reporters.

Research firm DisplaySearch has forecast global industry-wide sales of OLED televisions at 50,000 this year and 600,000 next year, with rapid growth thereafter to reach 7 million in 2016.

LG, which currently offers both curved and non-curved 55-inch screens, is estimated to have only sold a few hundred screens so far after starting sales earlier this year.

LCD technology is also getting better and this is where many of Samsung's and LG's rivals, which lack their South Korean rivals' deep pockets, are concentrating their efforts.

"OLED demand is likely to pick up strongly only after 2015. It has a long way to go to improve picture quality to the level of ultra-high definition and to lower production costs sharply," said Chung Won-suk, an analyst at HI Investment & Securities.

Samsung, seeking to avoid putting all its eggs in one basket, also unveiled on Thursday 55-inch and 65-inch ultra-high definition (UHD) TV sets which offer crisper LCD picture resolution. Sony Corp and Chinese manufacturers are aggressively marketing that technology.

As market dynamics remain uncertain, manufacturers' investment plans have so far been modest.

LG Display, which is also working from a pilot line, has just started investing 706 billion won ($611 million) this year in large OLED panels. Samsung Display has yet to announce its capital investment plan for production of large OLED screens.

Samsung said it will begin selling its curved OLED televisions outside South Korea from July but did not specify which countries. It has no plans to offer non-curved OLED screens this year.

Oil price falls below $95 ahead of inventory data

The price of oil fell below $95 a barrel on Wednesday as traders awaited the latest U.S. government report on energy supplies.

Benchmark oil for August delivery was down 53 cents to $94.79 per barrel in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange. The contract rose 14 cents to end at $95.32 a barrel on Tuesday

Carl Larry of Oil Outlooks and Opinions said in a commentary that he expects to see a drop in crude supplies when the U.S. Energy Department issues its weekly report on oil and gasoline supplies later in the day. The nation's supply of crude oil is near a record level, while gasoline supplies remain high because of tepid demand.

"Yes, the market seems well supplied, but that's because it's well under normal demand," Larry said.

Despite ample supplies, traders have voiced concerns about the escalating civil war in Syria, which could disrupt Middle East production and distribution, as well as the temporary closure of two major oil pipelines in Canada due to damage probably caused by heavy flooding.

Brent crude, which is used to set prices for oil used by many U.S. refineries to make gasoline, fell 8 cents at $101.18 a barrel.

In other energy futures trading on the Nymex:

? Natural gas rose 2 cents to $3.690 per 1,000 cubic feet.

? Heating oil fell 0.16 cents to $2.857 a gallon.

? Wholesale gasoline dropped 1.25 cents to $2.712 a gallon.

Americans and Chinese Vie to Do Business in Africa | Blogcritics

Shortly, President Obama will visit a number of African countries. Economic development will be a hot topic among the many to be discussed. Currently, China is developing partnerships throughout Africa, but does America have more in common with the African nations than China does? There are several areas where African interests converge more closely with America than with China, or with Asia in general.
obama-in-ghana
First, one in six people in the United States is African-American, compared with a much smaller number of people of African descent who are Chinese citizens. African-Americans have contributed enormously to American culture, science, and politics throughout their history in spite of the terrible legacy of slavery.

Second, the African continent would benefit from the U.S.?s political and governmental experience with democracy and democratic institutions. Also, the court system in the U.S. is much easier to navigate, as is the Uniform Commercial Code which governs business transactions.

Although China is beginning to experiment with capitalism, its commercial institutions are highly intertwined with state-run enterprises. As a consequence, consummating business transactions is more complicated in China.

Third, in the U.S., organizational management structure and accounting practices are highly standardized through centuries of business experience and tradition, including the Chartered Accountants of England and of Canada and Public Accountancy in the United States. The same advantages also hold for the European and American Stock Exchanges and bourses. Currently, the International Federation of Accountants has begun a long process of reconciling commonalities in global accounting standards. Nonetheless, the European and American accountancy bodies are at the cutting edge of accounting practice, as well as accounting and management information systems consultancy.

For all of the above reasons, African interests are more closely allied to the United States than to China or even Asia in general. Clearly, the United States has a comparative advantage in the
formulation and implementation of democratic institutions, the legal code, the U.S. court system, and the accounting, economic and financial standards which are centuries old.

Google's Transparency Report has long warned us about the dangers of government overreach, but that's not the only threat online -- there's plenty of malware to go around. Accordingly, Google is expanding its report to show the volumes of virus-infected and phishing sites found through the company's Safe Browsing technology. The data includes both attacking and victim pages, and it shows how well web hosts cope with successful infections. Combined, the new information doesn't paint a pretty picture. Google spotted a total of 67,909 compromised sites just in mid-June, and it still takes over a month for most affected webmasters to scrub their servers clean. The Safe Browsing data isn't very reassuring, then, but it is a friendly reminder to be careful on the web.

Syria death toll tops 100,000, rebels lose border town

By Dominic Evans and Oliver Holmes

BEIRUT (Reuters) - Syrian President Bashar al-Assad's forces have retaken a town on the Lebanese border as they press an offensive against rebels in a conflict that has now cost more than 100,000 lives, activists said on Wednesday.

The army took full control of Tel Kalakh, driving out insurgents and ending an unofficial truce under which it had allowed a small rebel presence to remain for several months.

The fall of Tel Kalakh, two miles from the border with Lebanon, marks another gain for Assad after the capture of the rebel stronghold of Qusair this month, and consolidates his control around the central city of Homs, which links Damascus to his Alawite heartland overlooking the Mediterranean coast.

Like Qusair, Tel Kalakh was used by rebels in the early stages of the conflict as a transit point for weapons and fighters smuggled into Syria to join the fight against Assad.

Pro-Assad websites showed video footage of soldiers patrolling the town in armored cars and on foot.

"Terrorist groups infiltrated and terrorized the local people," an army officer said in the video. "In response to the request of the local people, the army entered Tel Kalakh to cleanse the area and restore security."

The British-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, a pro-opposition monitoring group, said rebels left the town on Tuesday, retreating towards the nearby Crusader fort of Crac des Chevaliers. Three rebels were killed as the army moved in.

Six months ago, Assad's opponents were challenging the president's grip on parts of Damascus, but are now under fierce military pressure there, while their supply lines from neighboring Jordan and Lebanon have steadily been choked off.

DEATH TOLL TOPS 100,000

In response to Assad's gains, achieved with the support of Lebanon's pro-Iranian Hezbollah fighters who spearheaded the assault on Qusair, Western and Arab nations pledged at the weekend to send urgent military aid to the rebels.

Hezbollah's involvement has highlighted the increasingly sectarian dynamic in the Syrian conflict. Hezbollah and Tehran back Assad, whose Alawite minority is an offshoot of Shi'ite Islam, while Sunni Muslim states such as Turkey, Saudi Arabia and Qatar have stepped up support for the mainly Sunni rebels.

Radical Sunni militants from abroad, some of them linked to al Qaeda, are also coming in to fight alongside the rebels.

Jordan's King Abdullah said the war could ignite conflict across the Middle East unless global powers helped to convene peace talks soon.

"It has become clear to all that the Syrian crisis may extend from being a civil war to a regional and sectarian conflict...the extent of which is unknown," the monarch told Asharq al-Awsat newspaper in an interview.

"It is time for a more serious Arab and international coordination to stop the deterioration of the Syrian crisis. The situation cannot wait any longer," he added.

But prospects for proposed "Geneva 2" peace talks look bleak. Talks on Tuesday between the United States and Russia, which support opposing sides in Syria, produced no agreement on who should attend the conference or when it should be held.

Saudi Arabia, which views Shi'ite Iran as its arch-rival, has stepped up aid to Syrian rebels in recent months, supplying anti-aircraft missiles among other weapons.

"Syria is facing a double-edged attack. It is facing genocide by the government and an invasion from outside the government," Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Saud al-Faisal said on Tuesday. "(It) is facing a massive flow of weapons to aid and abet that invasion and that genocide. This must end."

The Observatory, which monitors violence through a network of security and medical sources in Syria, said the death toll from two years of conflict had risen above 100,000 - making it by far the deadliest of the uprisings to have swept the region.

It said the figure included 18,000 rebel fighters and about 40,000 soldiers and pro-Assad militiamen. But the true number of combatants killed was likely to be double that due to both sides' secrecy in reporting casualties, it said.

In addition to the casualties, it said, 10,000 people had been detained by pro-Assad forces and 2,500 soldiers and loyalist militiamen had been captured by the rebels.

The United Nations has put the death toll from the 27-month-old conflict at 93,000 by the end of April.

The violence has fuelled instability and sectarian tensions in Syria's neighbors, particularly Iraq and Lebanon.

At least 40 people were killed this week in the Lebanese city of Sidon in clashes between the army and gunmen loyal to a firebrand Sunni cleric who backs the Syrian rebels and has urged Sunnis to challenge Hezbollah's military might in Lebanon.

On Wednesday, unidentified attackers stabbed at least five passengers on a bus carrying Syrians in Beirut, security sources said. None of the victims was seriously wounded, they said.

98% Mud

All Critics (149) | Top Critics (33) | Fresh (146) | Rotten (3)

For at least three-quarters of the way, this is a fine film, and one that kids and parents could see together.

There is an enchanted-fairy-tale aspect to Mud, but its bright, calm surface only barely disguises a strong, churning undercurrent.

A modern fairy tale, steeped in the sleepy Mississippi lore of Twain and similar American writers, and with a heart as big as the river is wide.

Nichols has a strong feeling for the tactility of natural elements-water, wood, terrain, weather.

Nichols takes his time with the story, dwelling on how the boy is shaped by the killer's tragic sense of romance, yet the suspense holds.

"Mud" isn't just a movie. It's the firm confirmation of a career.

Just like its lead character, this film is packed to the brim with sadness, swagger and soul.

All the women in this movie are shrews, liars and/or emasculators.

Mud is a moving exploration into the nature of manhood, with superb performances, striking location and engrossing story creating a mesmerising and heartfelt coming of age drama.

A stripped back approach to tracking the process of growing up, but lacks the faith to see the plan executed to the end

Nichols takes his time unravelling Mud and Ellis's entwined fates, but his characters are so rich that it's well worth being in their company.

In its energy and nuance, Mud seems like the kind of film Hollywood would've made in the Seventies, and would've continued to do if not for the advent of market-conscious filmmaking.

More than a mere tribute to Twain and Dickens: this has all the makings of a modern classic.

An extremely sophisticated and progressive examination on how adolescent masculinity is defined by often-contradictory cultural attitudes towards femininity.

Mud is as beautiful to watch as it is to listen to, and feel kinship to, whether you're from the South or just Southern at heart.

In Jeff Nichols, America has a champion of the religious and working class. With the schism between the right and left in the U.S. growing ever larger... his ascent couldn't have come at a better time.

This is a film with a great naturalistic style and captivating performances and which does just about everything right.

Jeff Nichols writes characters with depth, nurtures strong performances form his cast and allows the screenplay's backwater setting to effectively create tone and texture.

This is American cinema at its very best as Huckleberry Finn meets Stand By Me.The two boys are terrific and McConaughey is sensational as Mud, dazzlingly frazzled as the hunted and haunted man on the run.

Up till just past the three-quarter mark, Mud is one heck of a nifty psychological fable.

The Southern-fried drama "Mud" is an electrifying example of what happens when you merge a crackerjack yarn with a very specific setting, and then pour on the heat with riveting performances.

McConaughey and Sheridan 's acting skills, as well as those of the entire supporting cast, make this movie better than it ought to be.

It gets under our skin because Nichols gives us time to come to know Mud's island like the places we knew as children.

As Mud might say, it's a hell of a thing.

The boys are so skillfully played that Mud also plays like cinema verite. Nichols' fluid camerawork suggests a documentary-style approach. That helps these young lads transform into flesh-and-blood characters who get our attention and support.

O3b space constellation to launch

An innovative new space network goes into orbit on Monday.

O3b will put a series of satellites 8,000km above the Earth to provide communications to those parts of the world that have poor fibre optic infrastructure.

With backing from blue chip companies such as Google, O3b believes its novel system can change the broadband experience for millions of people.

The network's first four satellites will launch from French Guiana.

They will ride a Soyuz rocket from the Sinnamary spaceport, with lift-off scheduled for 15:53 local time (18:53 GMT)

It will take just over two hours for the Soyuz's Fregat upper-stage to raise the satellites to their operational altitude.

O3b will handle primarily voice and data traffic for mobile phone operators and internet service providers. It will pick up this traffic as the spacecraft pass overhead and then relay it to ground stations, or teleports, for onward connection to global networks.

Although other satellites routinely do this, O3b is taking a markedly different approach.

By flying in a Medium-Earth Orbit of 8,000km, its satellites will be a quarter of the distance from Earth than is the case with traditional geostationary (GEO) telecommunications spacecraft, which sit some 36,000km above the planet.

This should reduce substantially the delay, or latency, of the signal as the voice or data traffic is routed via space.

"The network was designed to avoid much of the difficulty that satellite connectivity provides today which is this delay," said O3b CEO Steve Collar.

"We've all been on a satellite call and you have that 600 milliseconds delay, which doesn't sound like much but it's enough to make that connection almost unusable. It's just as much of a problem on data networks. If you are on the internet and are searching for a site, it affects your behaviour if you get slow responses. You'll stop using the service. We wanted to fix those problems and the only way to fix them is to bring the satellites closer to Earth."

O3b is promising round-trip transmission time of a little more than 100 milliseconds.

The satellites will operate in the high-frequency Ka-band and have the capability to deliver 10 beams, at 1.2Gbps per beam, to each of O3b's seven operational regions.

The company expects to start services at the end of the year, once it gets eight spacecraft in orbit, but the intention is to put up perhaps as many as 20 eventually.

It has taken about six years to put the O3b project together. Important backers include not only Google but SES, one of the big players in the traditional satellite communications business.

O3b was born from founder Greg Wyler's frustration with the difficulty of connecting a modern teleco in Rwanda to the global fibre optic network, and the constraints that placed on performance.

O3b actually stands for "other three billion" - the number of people whose poor communications experience is expected to improve over the coming decade. O3b sees itself as an important agent of that change.

"There are two billion people in the world that are connected to the internet today; there are five billion who are not; and three billion who will be in the course of the next 10-15 years," said Mr Collar. "The other three billion is our target - that's who we're trying to reach, and that's where our name comes from."

The Jersey, Channel Islands-based outfit has raised more than $1bn to build its space and ground infrastructure.

O3b's largest debt facility, over $0.5bn, is provided by HSBC, ING, CA-CIB and Dexia, and is underwritten by the French export credit agency, Coface. The agency is supporting three new space constellations, all of them built by Thales Alenia Space.

The 700kg spacecraft that TAS is building for O3b are based on the 24 spacecraft it has just finished for the Globalstar satellite phone network.

One of the challenges of running the system is tracking platforms as they move across the sky.

"The constellation will be spread equally around the equator which means you have to pick the satellite up as it comes over the horizon and follow it to the other side; and as soon as it goes out of visibility there is already another satellite waiting to be picked up," explained Philippe Nabet, the TAS programme manager on the O3b project.

"There will be three antennas at the ground stations - two to track the satellites; the third is a spare."

Lebanon clashes present test for weak military

BEIRUT (AP) ? Lebanon's third-largest city was turned into a battle zone Monday as the military battled heavily armed followers of an extremist Sunni cleric holed up in a mosque in a southern port city.

Residents fled as machine gun fire and grenade explosions shook the coastal area in one of the deadliest rounds of violence, seen is a test of the weak state's ability to contain the furies unleashed by Syria's civil war.

At least 16 soldiers were killed in two days of clashes with armed followers of Ahmad al-Assir, a maverick sheikh whose rapid rise among the ranks of some Sunnis is a symptom of the deep frustration among many who resent the Hezbollah-led Shiite ascendancy to power in Lebanon.

The fierce fight that al-Assir's fighters were putting up showed how aggressive Sunni extremists have grown in Lebanon, building on anger not only at Syria's regime but also its Shiite allies Hezbollah.

"Sidon is a war zone," said Nabil Azzam, a resident who returned to Sidon briefly on Monday to check on his home after having fled a day earlier with his family. "This is the result of all the sectarian rhetoric that has been building as a result of the war in Syria. It was bound to happen," he said by telephone, his speech interrupted by a burst of gunfire.

The fighting in Sidon is the bloodiest involving the army since the military fought a three-month battle in 2007 against the al-Qaida-inspired Fatah Islam group inside the Palestinian refugee camp of Nahr el-Bared in northern Lebanon. The Lebanese army crushed the group, but the clashes left over 170 soldiers killed.

The scenes of soldiers aiming at gunmen holed up in residential buildings in Sidon Monday and armored personnel vehicles deployed on the streets of Sidon evoked memories of Lebanon's 1975-90 civil war.

In many ways, the challenges facing the Lebanese military now resemble those that prevailed during that conflict, which eventually splintered the army along sectarian lines.

"It's the memory of this destructive war that remains as a restraining force ? for now," said Fawaz A. Gerges, director of the Middle East Center at the London School of Economics.

The civil war in Syria has for the past year been bleeding into Lebanon, following similar sectarian lines of Sunni and Shiite camps. Overstretched and outgunned by militias, the military has struggled to put out fires on multiple fronts in the eastern Bekaa valley and the northern city of Tripoli, as armed factions fought pitched street battles that often lasted several days.

In many cases, soldiers stood by and watched the violence helplessly.

The army, however, moved against al-Assir Monday after his followers opened fire on an army checkpoint unprovked.

Al-Assir, a 45-year-old skinny cleric with a long beard who supports the overwhelmingly Sunni rebels fighting to topple Assad, is an unlikely figure to challenge the army.

Few had heard of him until last year, when he began agitating for Hezbollah to disarm, taking advantage of the deep frustration among Lebanon's Sunnis who resent the Hezbollah-led Shiite ascendance to power in Lebanon, and a political void on the Sunni street following the 2005 assassination of former Prime Minister Rafik Hariri, a Sunni leader.

Last year, he set up a protest tent city complete with public lavatories and air conditioned containers , closing a main road in Sidon for a month in a sit-in meant to pressure Hezbollah to disarm.

There, he kept local and international media entertained by pulling stunts such as riding his bicycle and getting his hair cut in public while he openly challenged and taunted Hezbollah like few have dared before, even taking aim at Hezbollah leader Sheikh Hassan Nasrallah, a figure usually considered a red line in Lebanon.

In February, al-Assir caused a stir when he arrived in buses along with hundreds of his bearded supporters to a ski resort in the Christian heartland, where residents set up road blocks in an attempt to keep him out.

He teamed up with Fadel Shaker, a onetime prominent Lebanese singer-turned Salafist, who took to reciting versus of the Quran at al-Assir's protests. Shaker's brother, a close aide to al-Assir, was killed in confrontations with the army Monday, the National News Agency said.

Despite his zany, attention-seeking persona, the rants against Hezbollah by al-Assir, a firebrand preacher, resonated with many Sunnis bitter about the increasingly dominant role of Hezbollah Lebanese politics.

Many in the Western-backed coalition known as March 14, headed by Hariri's son, Saad, quietly gave al-Assir backing as he launched his tirades against Hezbollah, and several Sunni politicians attacked the army, accusing it of bias in favor of Hezbollah.

Last month, after Hezbollah openly joined the fighting in Syria alongside Assad's forces in the border town of Qusair, al-Assir called Sunnis in Lebanon to join the fight in Syria and accused the army of inaction in the face of Hezbollah's growing involvement in Syria.

But al-Assir appears to have overplayed his cards by attacking the army, the only trusted institution in the country, triggering a backlash.

"The bravery of the army facing al-Assir's well-armed supporters has shamed Lebanese politicians," said Hisham Jaber, a retired Lebanese army general who heads a Beirut-based think tank. He said the army appeared determined to remain neutral despite attempts by politicians to splinter it.

The two days of fighting have transformed Sidon, a Mediterranean city some 40 kilometers (25 miles) south of Beirut, left 50 wounded on Monday, the National News Agency said. At least two military officers were among those killed. Security officials said more than 20 of al-Assir's supporters were killed in the fighting, but did not provide an exact figure.

Machine-gun fire and rocket-propelled grenade explosions caused panic among residents, who also reported power and water outages. Snipers took over rooftops, terrorizing civilians, and many residents were asking for evacuation from the heavily populated neighborhood around the Bilal bin Rabbah Mosque where al-Assir preaches, and where the fighting has been concentrated.

The clashes erupted Sunday in the city, which had been largely spared the violence plaguing border area, after troops arrested an al-Assir follower. The army says supporters of the cleric opened fire without provocation on an army checkpoint.

Many people living on upper floors moved downstairs for cover or fled to safer areas. Some were seen carrying children as they fled. Others remained locked in their homes or shops, fearing getting caught in the crossfire. Gray smoke billowed over parts of the city.

The military appealed to the gunmen to hand themselves in, vowing it will "continue to uproot the strife and will not stop its operations until security is totally restored." By evening, the army had entered the mosque complex, though not the mosque itself.

Hezbollah appeared to be staying largely out of the ongoing clashes, though a few of its supporters in the city were briefly drawn into the fight Sunday, firing on al-Assir's supporters. At least one was killed, according to his relatives in the city who spoke anonymously out of concerns for their security.

Last week, al-Assir supporters fought with pro-Hezbollah gunmen, leaving two killed.

Fighting also broke out in parts of Ein el-Hilweh, a teeming Palestinian refugee camp near Sidon, where al-Assir has supporters. Islamist factions inside the camp lobbed mortars at military checkpoints around the camp.

Tension also spread to the north in Tripoli, Lebanon's second largest city. Masked gunmen roamed the city center, firing in the air and forcing shops and businesses to shut down in solidarity with al-Assir. Dozens of gunmen also set fire to tires, blocking roads. The city's main streets were emptying out. There was no unusual military or security deployment.

"The Syrian fire is beginning to devour Lebanon and the longer the conflict goes on, the more danger there is for Lebanon to implode," Gerges said.

Walid al-Moallem, Syria's foreign minister, blamed the violence in Lebanon on the international decision to arm rebels, saying that it will only serve to prolong the fighting in Syria and will impact neighboring Lebanon.

"What is going in Sidon is very dangerous, very dangerous," he told reporters in Damascus. "We warned since the start that the impact of what happens in Syria on neighboring countries will be grave."
