Ex-Cardinals executive Lamping named president of Jacksonville Jaguars

The NFL's Jacksonville Jaguars on Monday hired former baseball Cardinals executive Mark Lamping as team president. Lamping, who spent the last four years as president and CEO of MetLife Stadium in New Jersey, will be in charge of all nonfootball facets of the organization and will report directly to owner Shahid Khan.

A St. Louis native, Lamping served Anheuser-Busch in a variety of capacities from 1981 to 1993. In 1994, he was named president of the Cardinals and was responsible for business and facility operations. He resigned in March 2008. (AP)

Decision on Ward not made yet, Steelers say ? Pittsburgh Steelers general manager Kevin Colbert said the team has had "internal discussions on what to do about Hines Ward, but no decision has been made.'' NFL.com reported last week the Steelers were planning to release the franchise's all-time leading receiver.

Colbert also said running back Rashard Mendenhall (University of Illinois) probably will start the 2012 season on the physically unable to perform list while he continues to rehab the torn ACL in his right knee from the regular-season finale. (AP)

Moss says he wants to return to NFL ? Randy Moss, who compiled 14,858 receiving yards and 153 touchdowns in 13 NFL seasons, announced on a live webchat that he plans to come out of retirement next season. He last played in 2010, getting traded by the New England Patriots to the Minnesota Vikings before finishing the season with the Tennessee Titans. (AP)

Ex-NFL receiver Freddie Solomon dies ? Freddie Solomon, the former Miami Dolphins and San Francisco 49ers wide receiver who became known as "Fabulous Freddie" and committed himself to community service, died Monday after a nine-month battle with colon and liver cancer. He was 59. Solomon finished his 11-year NFL career with 371 receptions for 5,846 yards and 48 touchdowns in 371 games. His 43 TD catches with the Niners are tied for sixth-most in team history. (AP)

CUSA, Mountain West to form new league ? Members of Conference USA and current and future members of the Mountain West announced plans to form a new league that will begin in 2013. The conference probably will have 18-24 schools, split into divisions, and not only have a football championship game but also semifinals. It also will hold a conference basketball tournament, UNLV President Neal Smatresk said. (AP)

'Fighting Sioux' controversy continues ? North Dakota's Board of Higher Education voted to file a lawsuit challenging a state law requiring the University of North Dakota's athletics teams to be called the Fighting Sioux. The university has been seeking to drop the nickname because it fears penalties from the NCAA, which considers it offensive to American Indians. But the nickname has strong support among state residents who filed referendum petitions last week to put the question to voters. (AP)

Tim Davis is new offensive line coach at Florida ? Florida hired Tim Davis as offensive line coach. Davis, who filled the same role at Utah last season, replaces Frank Verducci, who left to pursue other interests. (AP)
