The dressing code for chefs is always a vital part of his or her portrayal of professional ethics. A high level of importance is accorded the code on chef clothing but it?s not something anyone would understand without individually breaking it down. For starters, the hat is the main symbol that shows one is familiar with cookery skills. It is more of a badge to the profession. Whenever they are in the kitchen, they are required to wear the hat, no matter what their level of skill is. Usually white, the hat could either come with pleats or none at all. It is rare to see black chef hats but they do exist, and it is often accorded by professional chefs to honorary cooks.

There is also the necktie, also white. The tie is commonly a big cloth made in a triangle shape, which they fold and tie loosely around their neck. Current identifications methods for the apprentice and the master cook are by the use of a necktie and the hat. If you enter a cooking class, the one wearing a tall chef hat and necktie would be the master cook. If you look at the apprentice, he would be wearing a smaller chef cap, and there would be no necktie in sight.

Chefs are also required to always wear the protective chef coat while in the kitchen. It serves as another symbol for the profession. Made from heavy but breathable fabric, the long-sleeved chef coat is white, with a row of buttons that could either be black or white. There are always boiling pots and sizzling pans in a busy kitchen. The long sleeves of the chef coat protect the cook from hot splashes that jump from the hot pots. It is mandatory to keep the sleeves straight, rolling them up is considered as inappropriate behavior.

Worn from the waist down, the apron and torchon are also items in the chef?s outfit. These two pieces go together as a match. The apron a protective cloth whose top is folded then wrapped around the waist. With two pockets, the apron is usually knee-length and comes in white cloth. Along with the apron is the torchon, which is more of a kitchen towel. It ideally is used to handle hot utensils when serving dishes, and to wipe of any spillage on the utensils before the food leaves the kitchen.

The dress code for chefs also require that they use the proper shoes and slacks. The ideal kind of slacks has a fine, checked fabric print of black or blue color interweaved with white. Or you could choose to wear a pair of black trousers or a pair of dark blue slacks instead. Using other colors for your trousers as well as various patterns or prints is not allowed. On the other hand, the shoes ? preferably slip-on ? should have soles with a strong grip or traction that will prevent it from slipping even on wet floors. It is also important that the fabric be impervious to oil and resistant to water.

The chef should also maintain good grooming. Any unnecessary items should be kept away from the kitchen, and his or her hair should always be tucked under the hat. Aside from maintaining good hand hygiene, he should also keep his nails short all the time. Avoid wearing too much makeup or, if possible, do not wear any makeup at all.
